Darjeeling is an elite black alpine tea. Unique taste and limited production have made it one of the most expensive in the world.
This famous tea is grown only in the Indian region of Darjeeling in the northern Himalayas. Tea is collected and made only by hand from the buds and upper young leaves of the tea bush. Unlike other varieties of Black Tea, Darjeeling is not fully fermented (~ 90%), and on this basis it is close to oolongs.
Darjeeling is considered "champagne tea" for its natural aroma of nutmeg, which can not be reproduced anywhere, in any other tea. The whole thing is a unique combination of local fertile soils, humid cool climate with abundant rains and ridges of hills, which provide plantations with perfect drainage. And although the possibilities of growing darjeeling are limited geographically, tea masters never increase its yield due to quality. The amount of darjeeling on the market from year to year is not the same and depends on how favorable the weather conditions were in the season for the ideal collection.
The history of the famous tea is less than two hundred years old. In 1841, the English surgeon Dr. Campbell planted several tea seedlings in the garden near his beachwood residence in Darjeeling, located at an altitude of 2134 meters above sea level. The quality of the harvest exceeded Campbell's boldest expectations, and a few years later the Indian government decided to develop tea production in the region. Today there are 87 tea gardens where Darjeeling is grown, and each has its own name and its own special history. Of course, the legendary tea is worth it.
After brewing a cup of darjeeling, you will first feel the delicate nutmeg aroma. The perfect taste of this tea will give a bright play of floral tones and subtle noble tartness, herbal aromas with spicy smoky notes.
